The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a self-proclaimed spiritualist, Odigie Moses, over the alleged sextortion of an Indian woman after reportedly threatening to publish her nude video online unless she paid him $1,100.
The anti-graft agency disclosed the arrest in a statement issued on Friday, saying the suspect was apprehended in Ekpoma, Edo State, following intelligence and investigations into the alleged cybercrime.
According to the EFCC, Moses allegedly presented himself on Zelle, a social media platform, as a spiritual healer with supernatural powers capable of solving life-threatening challenges.
The commission said the victim, an Indian woman who was seeking spiritual intervention for personal problems, contacted the suspect believing he could help her.
The EFCC alleged that during the course of the interaction, the suspect persuaded the woman to undergo what he described as a “naked spiritual bath” as part of the supposed healing process.
Unknown to the victim, Moses allegedly recorded the session live without her knowledge or consent.
Investigators said the suspect later used the explicit recording to blackmail the woman, threatening to release the video on the internet unless she paid him money.
According to the commission, the victim eventually transferred $1,100 to the suspect to prevent the nude video from being published.
The EFCC described the act as sextortion, noting that the arrest forms part of its ongoing efforts to combat cybercrime, online blackmail and other forms of financial and sexual exploitation carried out through digital platforms.
The anti-graft agency added that the suspect will be prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigations.
